I know it sounds like a little thing, but I have great success using Vaseline Petroleum Jelly with every diaper change as a skin protectant.

My baby is prone to diaper rash because she gets hot easily. Therefore, I have found that applying Vaseline after allowing the diaper area to dry has greatly reduced the occurrence of diaper rash, and it is also less expensive than treatment creams.

It's great for Mums too

I stored a tub of vaseline in my babies nappy drawer thinking that I would use it for her, which I did to an extent. The real user however was me. Lack of sleep and breastfeeding equalled sore nips and lips. So I got through tubs of the stuff! simply brilliant.
