More Food Please!
by Melanie
(pa, USA)
Well we have been trying some rice cereal. Sam has not been crazy about it and to not waste the breastmilk we put what he doesn't finish into his bottle and he sucks it down.
I have just returned back to work after a 6 month leave. I am trying to pump at work but can only find 2 times during the 8.5 hr work shift to do this. I pumped about 9 ounces. This will not be enough to keep up with Sam's dietery needs. I have been taking fenugreek(a herb supplement to stimulate milk production) and drinking mother's milk tea 3X a day(another herb supplement). I have some frozen milk stored up.
This week Sam tried the oatmeal. Oatmeal went about the same as the rice cereal. This morning I gave him oatmeal mixed with breastmilk and a little mashed banana. He has had banana previously with no effects. This went ok but still not eating real well. And he seems so hungry to me. He is always stairing at me eating and smiling.
This afternoon I decided I would just try some sweet potatoes and he ate all that I offered minus what was on his bib. I think this type of food might go better than the cereals. I just really wish I could produce enough milk to stay away from the formula but we will see. I will keep you posted.

by Melanie
(Pennsylvania, USA)
This morning we did the banana again it was about a one inch slice mashed up with his breastmilk and he ate every bit and loved it. We did a lot of running today so I am not sure how happy he was in the evening he did seem happy. No bm today so we will watch for it tomorrow. He did sleep well last night.

Day 3 - Not so hungry today!
by Melanie
(Pennsylvania, USA)
We tried the bananas again this morning and this time it seemed like everything I put into his mouth came back out so we quit. That was our only attempt of the day. Sam has still not had a bowel movement. He did have a few of the fibrous material from the banana come out. Just as I read in the sites food blog they did look like very tiny black worms that were not moving. Sam is still sleeping fine at night.

Day 4 - Bananas and Bm's!
by Melanie
(Pennsylvania, USA)
I have decided not to try the bananas today because Sam has still yet to have that bowel movement. I am going to just nurse him all day on demand since we have nowhere to be today. He is passing the gas. If he does get a good bowel movement today I may start again tomorrow or decide maybe I am just trying to early. He just seemed so eager to eat the banana off that spoon those first two days. We weighed him on the WII video game this morning he was 11.9 lbs and he is 20 weeks today and 12 weeks adjusted age.

Day 5 - Finally Dirty Diaper
by melanie
(pa usa)
I am very happy to report that mid morning Sam finally had a diaper full. It seemed to be of usual consistency but did contain a lot. He wasn't pushing real hard.
I think I may wait longer for the solids. I really want to increase my milk supply. I can't tell if there is enough. I just don't feel as full anymore. We did spend yesterday nursing all day. An hour after I nursed him and put him to bed, I used my double electric breast pump. I only obtained 1 oz from each side. This concerned me. So today we are off to nurse as much as we can again. That is what the lactation consultant said to do. I just am not sure. I remember when I did a lot of pumping that seemed to help supply. I am also thinking of getting back on the Fenugreek herb I was taking. I went off of it 2 weeks ago when the bottle emptied and my primary care doctor was not sure what it was. But the lactation consultant seemed to think it was not a bad idea to use. We will see.
Right now I really wouldn't mind waking up in the middle of night with full breasts. At least then I would know I have plenty. So I am not sure if you want to hear more since we are going to abort solids at this time and stick to breastmilk. I will keep you updated though.

Day 6 - No BM but I am really hungry Mom!
by Melanie
(Pennsylvania USA)
Even though Sam had 2 dirty diapers yesterday, he did not have one today.
My milk supply seems pretty good.
I did not wake up in the middle of the night with full breasts but this morning was able to pump a 5oz bottle and nurse at same time. We had to pick up Sam's big brother at boy scout camp and I wanted to have a bottle to take. I know mornings are always the best milk supply but I was very happy with that. This evening about 730 he seemed so hungry. I was giving him a 5 oz bottle and decided to take 1 tablespoon of rice cereal and mix with 4 tablespoons of breastmilk. He took a few baby spoons of this mixture with no problem then he wasn't sure. I finished the bottle then... did something I know they do not recommend I poured the mixture into the bottle and put the medium flow nipple on and he had no problem sucking that down. So we will watch for BMs again tomorrow.
The weather has been very hot and I am trying to nurse him as much as I can to keep him hydrated. Good night all.
