Bum Genius Diapers

When my husband started praising the Bum Genius diapers it really confirmed that they were great diapers!

I knew I wanted to use cloth diapers but my husband was less convinced. In order to convince him to change our daughters diapers I told him he wouldn't need to do anything different than when we used disposable diapers. And with the Bum Genius he really doesn't!

They are an all-in-one pocket diaper. After I wash the diapers I put the liners in the diaper and put the tabs on so they are folded up and ready to go. He takes the dirty diapers off, puts it in the dry diaper bucket and puts a new one on. So easy. When I change diapers I pull the liners out but you don't really have to.

The diapers are really absorbent as well and my husband has commented multiple times how much easier and cleaner it is to deal with a(nursing baby) poopy diaper since so much gets absorbed. There isn't any pooling and there is less to clean off of her skin.

While my husband likes the convenience there are a lot of other attributes I like about these diapers.

Laundry Tabs-Patches on the diaper to attach the velcro to when you wash them. Prevents the velcro from shredding more delicate
fabric. Really prevents a lot of wear and tear.

Absorbable-I prefer the cloth diapers over disposable for preventing leaks. We used disposable diapers for the first month and a half and we kept having leaks and getting stains on our daughters outfits. When we switched the leaks stopped! The liners are super absorbent and work way better than disposable diapers! Also the inner fabric on the cover wicks the moisture away from the skin.

Easy to launder-I make my own detergent and it seems to work better than store-bought but even so the diapers are easy to wash and seem to hold up to lots of washing. I run them through a cold rinse cycle then a hot wash cycle. I prefer to line dry them and if I have to use the dryer I put only the liners in the dryer and throw the covers over the shower rod, they dry very quickly.

Great Colors-They look so cute on a little baby bottom and so colorful all lined up on my clothesline.

Comfort-With the disposables the plastic(or whatever they are made of) would make my daughter have a sweaty back and would leave red marks on her legs but not with the Bum Genius. Also the material Bum Genius uses is very pleasant, it's all very soft yet sturdy.

One diaper fits most-With the front snaps and velcro strip all the way across the front you can adjust to fit your child for most of the time they are in a diaper. As I have written below we didn't like the diaper on our newborn but from about 1 1/2 months and up they have a spectacular fit. We have a 2 1/2 year old (who is certainly not small for her age)and they diapers even fit her well. We used the diapers on her, until recently, at night.

Clean smelling-Friends and family have been unconvinced when I tell them that our daughter probably needs to be changed because they can't smell anything. With a wet diaper the smell is less apparent than with a disposable. Poopy diapers are a little more obvious:)

There are a couple of cons, but I think the positive aspects make them worthwhile.

Cost-It's a big investment to get started with each diaper costing around $18. Each diaper is made to take you from a couple months old all the way to 2-3 yrs old though. If you save up during the pregnancy it's not too bad and I would have spent the money on diapers anyway. So the cost can seem a little daunting but with a little planning it's manageable.

Bulky for newborn-I bought the diapers thinking I could use them on my newborn as you can fold them and snap them to make them really small but I found that they were just WAY too bulky to use. We used disposables that had been given to us as gifts when our daughter was born instead until she grew a bit. Also the diapers aren't as slim as disposables and some of the little pants don't fit as well. Sleepers and one piece outfits don't seem to give us any trouble though.

Overall, I love my Bum Genius diapers and if you could ask my daughter, I know she would say she does as well!

by: Denise

hi, i use bumgenius as well and i love them too! my question is, how do you make the detergent for the diapers. i've read so many warnings against using it, especially for bumgenius inserts. i already make my own for our clothes (typical ingredients: borax, washing soda, and zote). thanks for any help you can give.
