We're going through the change!

A change of appearance, that is!

You may have noticed that some of the pages on our site look (quite) a bit different to the others! That's because we're treating ourselves to a makeover - which, we hope, will make it easier for you to find your way around all the information on our site.

Although things may LOOK a little different here and there, ALL of our pages are still in place - so if you happen to find anything that's not working as it should, then please let us know!

We'd also love to hear your comments (good or bad) about the new design. So don't be shy - if you think there's something we could be doing better, we encourage you to write and tell us!

We look forward to hearing from you.

Tip of the month - Be a 'veggie sneak' with Bubble and Squeak!

We often get e mails from worried parents whose babies have started refusing their veggies.

So this month's tip is a marvellous way to get your tot to tuck into an assortment of healthy vegetables - without even realizing he's doing it!

So what is bubble and squeak?

Bubble and squeak is an English dish that uses up some of the leftovers from a traditional English Sunday roast. It usually contains potatoes and vegetables (normally cabbage) and is served with the remaining cold roast meat on Monday!

With a little modification, the traditional bubble and squeak recipe can be used to create a yummy and wholesome finger food for your baby.

First, you need potato...

To make bubble and squeak, you need mashed potato. Simply peel and boil white potatoes and cut into chunks, then put into boiling water and simmer until fork tender.

The best potatoes for mashing are floury varieties such as Russet, Yukon Gold, Caribe and Idaho.

Mash the potato with a little butter and milk if you wish, but

  • DON'T puree it - this makes it sticky and hard to work with

  • DON'T make it too thin - you will be forming it into patties and it needs to hold its shape
Interesting alternative

You may like to make your baby's bubble and squeak with sweet potato instead of white. Sweet potato isn't a traditional ingredient - but breaking with tradition can be fun! And, of course, sweet potatoes are healthier for your baby.

Add the veggies

If you have cooked vegetables to hand, great! Chop them very finely and stir them into the mashed potato.

You can use pretty much ANY vegetable you like - carrots, broccoli, courgette (zucchini)... whatever's available!

If you don't have any cooked veggies, then finely dice some fresh vegetables of your choice and saute in a little olive oil (throw in a little crushed garlic, too, if your baby likes it). Once the vegetables have softened, stir them into the mashed potato.

Make into shapes

When the mashed potato/veggie mixture is cool enough to handle, form it into shapes with your hands. These are for your baby to feed himself, so make sure the shapes are easy for him to manage - little round patties or even 1 inch wide 'fingers' are ideal!

The final step

Either

Heat a little olive oil in a frying pan/skillet and fry (turning once) until golden.

Or

Brush with a little olive oil and bake at 350 deg F (180 deg C) until nicely golden on top.

And there you have it - a little taste of England, full of hidden goodness!

Safety Recalls

Our featured product review - Pureeing Made Easy!

Cuisinart CSB-44N Cordless Rechargeable Hand Blender
Buying special equipment to make your own baby food isn't essential - but it can certainly make life a lot easier.

It's possible to create perfect purees by pushing foods through a sieve - but if you plan on cooking in bulk for your baby, then the sieve method can be a very time consuming chore!

So what's the easiest way to puree large quantities of food for your baby?

Well, we recommend using a hand blender - and the Cuisinart Cordless Rechargeable Hand Blender is one of our favourites!

We've always LOVED using hand blenders for baby food because they're so convenient - you can just blend food in the pot you cooked it in, then pop the blending shaft under the tap to clean it. It really doesn't get an easier than that!

Or does it?

The Cuisinart Cordless Rechargeable Hand Blender has the edge over most hand blenders because it's cordless - and that's actually a huge bonus!

For one thing, you can blend food on the stove top, without worrying about melting a trailing cord. Being able to move freely around the kitchen, pureeing as you go, really does make preparing big batches of baby food as easy as can be!

The other big advantage of a cordless blender is that you can take it with you when you're out and about. Once fully charged, it will run for about 15 minutes - plenty of time to whip up a day's worth of food for your little one when you're on the go.

Even after your baby has grown out of pureed foods, the Cuisinart blender will go on being a useful accessory and is ideal for making sauces and smoothies!

The Cuisinart CSB-44N Cordless Rechargeable Hand Blender is currently available for the low price of $40.00 - a great investment to make life a little easier!

Website of the Month

Our featured site this month is the excellent, non-profit, free to use Freecycle.org.

The concept of the site is simple. Every day, across the world, people throw away perfectly good items that they no longer have any use for. Yet there are many other individuals in their neighbourhood who certainly COULD make use of these items. Freecycle.org brings the two groups together.

The Freecycle group operates in 75 countires and has millions of members. And by allowing its members to advertise items that they want to give away, or those that they need, the group says that it is keeping over 300 tons a day out of landfills - an impressive and worthwhile achievement!

The service offered by the Freecycle group is absolutely ideal for parents with young families. Some items that we buy for our children get very little use and may still be in very good condition by the time they are no longer needed. So it makes perfect sense to donate an item that someone else could use via Freecycle! Then, if there's something that YOU need in the future, you may find that another member has donated that very item!

We hope that more and more parents will sign up as members, so that this becomes the first port of call when looking for baby equipment AND passing on used items. Not only cost effective, this is an excellent way to reduce the worldwide problem of unnecessary waste.

Visit Freecycle.org to sign up to a group near you and start today by donating your unwanted items!

This month's recipe - Creamy Turkey and Grapes (7 months+)

If you're in the US, then you may find yourself with a lot of cooked turkey on your hands later on this month!

There are many ways in which you can use the leftovers for your baby - check out our chicken recipes for some ideas that will work equally well with turkey, instead!

But here's another interesting and unusual recipe you can try, that combines turkey with other healthy ingredients to produce a gourmet treat for your little one!

You can use this dish in a variety of ways - for older babies, it makes a wonderful sandwich filling and is delicious served wrapped in a wholewheat tortilla. It also makes a yummy topping for a baked potato, or you could serve it with strips of toasted bread, bagels or pita!

To make the grape puree...

Put the grapes into a saucepan and cover them with water. Warm them gently for around 10 mins, but do not boil them. This loosens the skins and makes it easy to push them through a metal sieve, leaving the skins behind.

You will need...

4oz cooked turkey, chopped very finely
2oz grapes, pureed
1/2 avocado, mashed
1oz unflavoured, natural yogurt
little pinch dried tarragon (optional)
little pinch freshly ground black pepper (optional)

The beauty of this recipe is the ease of preparation - all you need to do is stir the above ingredients together, then chill.

For older babies, or if you plan to share this dish with your little one, you may like to add a little fresh lemon juice.

Bon appetit!
