March 17, 2008 14:36 - Fantastic Footwear for Little Feet (Available Internationally)
We've always been big fans of Robeez footwear - but there's another kid on the block that's really giving Robeez a run for their money!
Preschoolians is a company founded by Jeffrey Silverman, a father of three who has been awarded with five different patents for his inventions in chidren's footwear by the US governement.
The company's motto is 'Where Barefoot is Best' - and, whilst going barefoot is not always practical, their unique shoes are designed with that principle in mind.
Flexibility is achieved with the use of special 'bars' in key points around the shoes, making Preschoolians (according to their literature) the most flexible shoes in the world.
Preschoolian shoes are only available online...
...so the company provides a unique 'Accufit' Measuring Device, to help you select the right size from home. If you're in the US, you can have this mailed to you - otherwise, you can simply print it out on your computer. There is also a handy size conversion table on their website.
But the most innovative feature of Preschoolians shoes has to be their 'VISU FIT WINDOW'.
Named Time Magazine's Coolest Invention in Children's Shoes , it's basically a clear panel on the bottom of the shoe that allows you to see how close your little one's toes are to the end of the shoe (you just remove the footbed from the shoe to check).
This is HEAPS better than trying to feel for the tips of your baby's toes and gives you greater confidence that the shoes he's wearing fit him correctly.
Shoes, slippers, boots and sandals come in 4 different 'stages'
Crawlers
Walkers
Runners
Adventure
... and there is a HUGE selection of designs to choose from!
Looking for a pair of shoes to match a specific outfit? Preschoolians actually allows you to fully customize your baby's shoes using their "Design Your Own' feature!
New customers can currently Get 15% Off the World's Most Flexible Kids Shoes with their first order, so it's a good time to check out their site and see why we give Preschoolians shoes a big thumbs up!

March 18, 2008 16:00 - Recall of Magnetic Toys (Including Pre-School Toys) US
Another day, another recall of magnetic toys - and this time, some of the toys concerned are designed for pre-schoolers.
The first set of toys involved are MEGA Brands MagnaMan Magnetic Toy Figures, an assortment of action figures with magnetic parts. For more details of the models involved and for instructions on how to return them, please visit the CPSC website.
The second recall includes Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. Pre-school Magnetic Toys, which feature flexible parts containing magnets.
You can see images and descriptions of the exact products and model numbers here.
In both cases the problem is, as always with recalls of this type, that the magnets can fall out of the toys, posing the very serious risks of intestinal blockage and perforation to children.

March 18, 2008 16:08 - Drying Your Own Herbs
Adding fresh herbs to your baby's food is a great way to add flavour WITHOUT adding salt.
Depending on where you are in the world, however, certain fresh herbs may not be available to you all year round. OR - you may have bought more of a particular herb than you can use for the recipe you're making and need a way to prolong its life!
So it's useful to know how to dry fresh herbs for future use - and it's VERY easy to do!
Make sure the herbs are COMPLETELY dry (blot with a paper towel if not). Damp herbs will rot rather than dry!
For sturdy, low moisture herbs like thyme, rosemary, oregano, sage and dill Tie the stems of the bunches together with wool, then hang the bunch (upside down) from a hook. We use a row of key hooks for this! To protect the herbs from dust, you can carefully slide a paper bag over the bunch, gathering and securing it at the top. Punch holes in the bag to allow the air to circulate.
For herbs with a higher moisture content, like basil, chives and tarragon Spread the leaves on a piece of muslin, but allow the air to circulate underneath. To achieve this, we stretch the muslin over the top of a colander, overlapping the edges and tying it on with a piece of string, then sit the leaves on top.
Keep the drying herbs in a warm, dark area with good ventilation and no damp - the ideal temperature for storing leaves is between 70 and 90 deg F.
Let the herbs dry for around 2 weeks, then check them. Continue to check them on a weekly basis. They are ready when they are brittle and dry - but be careful not to OVER-dry them! If they are left for too long, they will crumble into dust when you go to use them.
Rub the hanging herbs from their stems and store in air-tight containers, away from direct sunlight. Do not crush the larger leaves (like basil) before you store them as they will lose some of their flavour - it's much better to crush them just before you use them.
Dried herbs will last for around 12 months - but remember, they will taste a lot stronger than fresh. As a rule of thumb - if you WOULD have used 1 tablespoon of a fresh herb in a recipe, only use 1 teaspoon of the dried variety.

March 20, 2008 11:33 - An Easter Treat for Older Babies - Oaty Apple Cookies
These yummy, sugar free Easter cookies make the perfect treat for babies from around 12 months of age (please note that they are fairly chewy and require your child to be able to bite and chew well. Please do NOT give these cookies to younger babies who are new to finger foods).
Your older children (and you!) will enjoy these tasty cookies too!
Pre heat the oven to 375 deg F (180 deg C). Mix the dry ingredients together in one bowl and beat the wet ingredients together in another. Combine the wet and dry ingredients. Then, using a dessert spoon, spoon the mixture into individual 'blobs' on to a greased baking sheet. Bake for around 10 mins, until firm.

March 23, 2008 21:26 - Wrong Advice on Cow & Gate Baby Milk (UK)
According to a report in the Sunday Mirror, 500,000 cartons of incorrectly labelled ready made formula have been sold to consumers in the UK.
Labels on the cartons advise parents to feed their children 60% more milk than suggested by Government guidelines - and this, of course, could lead parents to overfeed their infants.
Despite the company's acknowledgement of the error, they are NOT planning to recall incorrectly labelled cartons still available for sale - although they will be relabelling all cartons in future.
Unfortunately, we haven't been able to track down details of the batches involved and there is no information about this given on Cow & Gate's website.
But if you have any Cow & Gate ready made formula at home and are concerned about the feeding guidelines given on the label, then we suggest you contact Cow & Gate on 08457 623 623 for clarification.
