Gorton's 6 Crispy Battered Fish Fillets are being recalled because, strangely, a customer reported finding pills in the product. Although this seems to be an isolated incident and no other reports have been received, the company is recalling these items as a precaution.

March 3, 2008 14:24 - Recall of Four Bean Salad (US)

Containers of Four Bean Salad are being recalled by Walker's Food Products Company of Missouri because they may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. This makes the product very dangerous to consume as it can lead to botulism, a form of food poisoning that can be fatal.

The recalled products come in 16oz., 5-lb. and 10-lb. containers and were sent to Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa for distribution to both restaurants and retail stores. The 16oz containers were packaged under the Kay's Gourmet brand name. The larger containers are made of clear plastic with an expiration date stamped on the bottom. The expiration dates included in this recall are 12/23/07 thru 04/5/08.

If you have bought any of these products, please return them to the place you bought them from for a full refund. If you need more information, please call the company at 1-800-725-2372.

March 4, 2008 09:30 - The Easy Way to Separate Eggs

Egg whites should be avoided during your baby's first year because they may cause allergic reactions. Egg yolk, on the other hand, makes a good addition to your baby's diet. Cooked egg yolk can be crumbled into a variety of foods or used as a thickener for runny purees, adding a welcome nutritive boost at the same time.

But just HOW do you separate the yolk from the white?

On our page all about introducing eggs to baby, we explain how you can either hard boil an egg (then remove the white), or crack an egg over a bowl, moving the yolk from one half of the cracked shell to the other, letting the white run through your fingers and into the bowl.

Roosty Egg Separator
But if you'd like an easier method - and gain a cute kitchen accessory into the bargain - then take a look at the Roosty Egg Separator from Wrapables.com. You just clip it on to the side of your bowl, crack the egg over it and - hey presto - the whites run through and the yolk stays in the rooster!

As a bonus, Wrapables.com are having a huge Easter sale - with up to 60% off a range of cool kitchen accessories - and the Roosty Egg Separator is currently reduced from $2.95 to just $1.99!

March 5, 2008 16:35 - Mums Feel Awkward Breastfeeding in Public

A new survey, carried out by Kamillosan Chamomile Ointment in the UK, has shown that many mothers feel so awkward breastfeeding in public that they will only do it indoors, or will even choose to feed their babies in a public lavatory rather than face hostile glares from others.

54 per cent of mothers interviewed say they have been subjected to unwanted attention while breastfeeding and - disturbingly - one in eight have actually been asked to stop. Some mothers have felt so uncomfortable that they have left their babies screaming for milk, rather then breastfeed. And a third of mothers have felt obliged to bottle feed their babies (with either expressed breast milk or formula) rather than deal with the unwanted attention and problems breastfeeding in public has caused them.

It is shocking, sad and deeply maddening that mothers are made to feel this way about what is - literally - the most natural act in the world. Breastfeeding offers enormous benefits for both Mum AND baby and it really does beggar belief that someone would actually be offended by such a special act.

What's worrying about this survey is that many Mums may be put off breastfeeding altogether - after all, the convenience of nursing is somewhat lost if you are unable to comfortably feed your baby when out and about.

One option (and we suggest this for YOUR peace of mind and not because we feel that others should be spared the sight of a nursing mother) is a 'purpose-built' breastfeeding 'cover up'. BabyCenter Stores in the US have a nice range (including the Cara Mia Baby Nursing Cover-Up Sage Toile )

Until attitudes change, we need to do our best to support breastfeeding-friendly establishments in our local areas, to show them the importance of making us feel comfortable in the simple act of feeding our children.

www.breastfeedingsupport.co.uk have lots of great information about the best places to breastfeed when you're out and about in the UK and Mothering Magazine in the US produces a great Pocket Guide to Breastfeeding in Public in the US. And here's a great article from the La Leche League about one Mum's struggle to comfortably breastfeed her child in public.

If YOU know of any breastfeeding-friendly establishments that other Mums might want to know about, too, please leave your comments below - or simply contact us and we'll publish the details on our blog.

March 5, 2008 21:17 - Recall of Infantino Rattles (US)

Infantino Lamb Grabby Rattles are being recalled because the tail-piece on the rattles can come off, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Although the company has received eight reports of the tail piece detaching, no children have been injured.

The lamb shaped rattles have an Infantino logo stamped on the lamb's front right foot. The only rattles involved in this recall are those with the date code '0907' printed behind the lamb's left ear. The production brand code is printed in a dial (see pictures below) where the year appears in the middle and the arrow points to a number representing the month. Rattles without a date code are NOT involved in this recall.

These rattles were sold for between $3 and $4 by Babies R Us, Wal-Mart and other speciality stores from September 2007 through February 2008.

If your child has one of these rattles, please take it away and contact Infantino, who will issue with either a replacement rattle or another product of equivalent value.

You can contact Infantino toll-free at (888) 808-3111 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. PT or visit their website.

March 7, 2008 08:08 - Gulliver Highchairs Recalled by IKEA (UK)

These highchairs have an article number of 400.501.21.

IKEA is asking customers who bought this highchair in either January or February this year to return them to the 'Exchange & Returns' department, where they will be given a free, replacement Gulliver highchair.

March 7, 2008 14:34 - Brilliant Bean Spread for Baby

Today's recipe is for a simple spread, combining wholesome pinto beans with creamy Ricotta cheese!

Pinto beans are brimming with nutrients, including iron, protein, folate and vitamin B1. They have a nice, creamy texture, making them perfect for this recipe!

Although we suggest using this recipe as a spread, either for lightly toasted bread, bagels or crackers, it also works wonderfully as a dip for lightly cooked veggies (or whatever your baby enjoys dipping)!

The preparation guidelines given below may seem lengthy - but that's because we explain how to cook the pinto beans from their dried form. Although the instructions may LOOK involved, the process is very simple indeed!

You will need...

4oz (1/2 cup) dried pinto beans
4oz (1/2 cup) Ricotta cheese
pinch of garlic powder
1 tbsp unsalted butter (melted)
1tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
1tbsp fresh dill, chopped

To prepare the pinto beans...

Sort through them to make sure there are no small stones or dirt, then put them in a colander and hold them under running water to give them a good rinse.
Put the beans in a saucepan and cover with 8fl oz (1 cup) of water.
Bring them to the boil, continue to boil for a few minutes, then remove from the heat and cover.
Set aside and allow the beans to soak for 2 hours.
At the end of the soaking time, drain the beans then rinse them thoroughly with cold water.
Next, pour 24 fl oz (3 cups) of clean water over the beans and bring to the boil.
Lower the heat and simmer the beans, partially covered, for around 1 1/2 hours, until tender.
Drain, then set aside to cool.

The steps above make the beans much more digestible and reduce the chance of them giving your baby gas/wind. The most important step is to DRAIN the soaked beans then add CLEAN water before cooking them. Cooking them in the water they soaked in makes them MORE likely to cause gas. It's also worth noting that beans usually only cause gas when they are eaten infrequently - people who consume them on a regular basis rarely experience problems with gas!

How to make Baby's Bean Spread...

Put the cooked pinto beans, the Ricotta cheese, the garlic powder and the melted butter into a food processor and blend until smooth.
Stir in the chopped, fresh herbs - then chill until ready to serve!

Adults will enjoy this recipe, too, although they may prefer it with a good squeeze of fresh lemon juice!

March 8, 2008 15:02 - Why Breastfeeding Prevents Obesity - New Research

New research may have discovered why breastfed babies are less prone to obesity than those who are formula-fed... and apparently it's all down to bacteria!

Studies in Finland, just published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that babies with high numbers of bacteria called bifidobacteria and LOW numbers of Staphylococcus aureus in their gut may be less likely to gain excess weight in later life. And the good news is that there are lots of bifidobacteria in the guts of breast fed babies.

A reduced risk of obesity in later life has always been suggested as a benefit of breastfeeding and studies have always supported this claim, but experts have never been able to establish exactly WHY this is so. But now it seems that the prevalence of good bacteria in the gut is the key to healthy weight gain - although experts are still trying to find out just how bacteria in the intestine is associated with obesity.

For the time being, it's useful to know that the link between breastfeeding and healthy weight gain has been more firmly established - but it's important to remember that, once your baby starts solids, a healthy diet is essential to continue to protect him from gaining excess weight in the future.
