February 18, 2008 08:23 - Massive Beef Recall (US)

You have probably already heard that America's largest recall of beef is currently under way - so what will this recall mean to you?

The recall involves frozen beef products from the Westland/Hallmark Meat Co in Chino, dating back to 1 February 2006. Officials say that most of the meat has already been eaten and it is not clear how much is still in the food chain.

The recall was triggered by an undercover video at a meat-packing plant in California. The video showed that cattle, unable to walk, were being mistreated and were allowed to enter the food chain. Cattle that are unable to walk prior to slaughter are known as 'downer' cattle and are considered to be unfit for human consumption because they are at greater risk of contamination by E. coli and salmonella, or of contracting mad cow disease.

Some of the beef went to Federal food and nutrition programs and some major fast-food chains. However, the USDA has described this as a "Class 2" recall, meaning that the probability the meat could be harmful to health is remote.

For more information, you will find a complete 'Questions and Answers' page concerning this recall on the USDA website.

February 20, 2008 21:56 - Recall of Cinderella Battery-Powered Toy Cars (US)

Cinderella 12-Volt Electric Ride-On Vehicles are being recalled because they present a fire hazard. The problem is caused by the wires under the hood of the car and/or in the battery compartment beneath the seat, which can short circuit.

No injuries have been reported, but there have been many incidents of wires overheating - one of which involved flames shooting out from underneath the hood.

The car was sold at Wal-Mart stores for around $200, from August 2005 through February 2006. It looks like the Pontiac Solstice, with Cinderella graphics on the sides and front. The car is light blue, with pink wheels, steering wheel and seats. Some models have an optional radio and 'Pontiac Solstice' is printed on the back of the car. 'Walt Disney’s Cinderella Special Edition' is printed on the license plate.

This car was intended for children from 4 to 7 years of age.

If you have one of these toys, please stop your children from using it (not an easy task!) and contact Dumar International at (866) 424-0500 between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. You will be issued with a free retrofit kit, which includes a new battery. You can also visit the Dumar International website.

February 20, 2008 22:14 - Recall of Spiderman Water Bottles (US)

Spiderman Water Bottles, sold exclusively at Sears, are being recalled because they present a choking hazard. There have been reports of the screws underneath the lid coming loose and falling into the cup.

The bottles (pictured below) are red, blue, black and white and have a picture of Spiderman on the cup and a Spiderman figure on the lid.

These bottles were sold for around $10 from July 2007 through August 2007.

If you have one of these bottles, please don't allow your children to use it. Instead, you should contact Fast Forward LLC toll-free at (877) 244-4433 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. You can then arrange to return the bottle for a full refund.

February 23, 2008 15:39 - Recall of Kids' Dart Boards (US)

Children's dart boards, sold by Family Dollar stores from January 2001 through January 2008 and ironically labellled 'FUN ‘N SAFE Magnetic Dart Boards' are being recalled. This is because the small magnets at the end of the darts can detach and could be swallowed or aspirated by children. Swallowing more than one magnet is extremely dangerous, as the magnets can attract each other, causing potentially fatal intestinal blockages or perforations.

The dart boards, which cost around $5, are about 15 inches wide and have a black, white, green, and red bulls eye checkered design. They come with six 4inch long magnetic darts and 'Made in China' is embossed on the back of the board.

If you have one of these boards, please take it away from your children and return it to your nearest Family Dollar store for a refund. If you have any questions, please contact Family Dollar at (800) 547-0359 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit their website.
