February 11, 2008 08:10 - Recall of VTech Discovery Playground Toys (Australia)

VTech Discovery Playground toys sold only in Kmart Australia stores from 18 June 2007 are being recalled. There are cloth tabs attached to one part of the product that may fall off their plastic holder and this presents a choking hazard to young children.

February 12, 2008 22:06 - Toast and Constipation

My babies all loved toast! They'd have it for breakfast and liked fingers of toast at lunch time, too, to dip into veggie purees or even yogurt.

But you can have too much of a good thing!

Amanda from London in the UK wrote to us last week about her little boy, Ethan (aged 9 months). She told us that he regularly suffers with constipation, so we asked her to tell us about Ethan's diet.

It turned out that he's a bit of a picky eater - but there's one food he really enjoys and is eating at almost every meal time - and that's toast!

Now, if you've ever heard of the B.R.A.T. diet that many pediatricians recommend after a bout of diarrhea, you'll know it consists of bananas, rice, applesauce... and toast! And the reason that these foods are recommended is that they are binding - in other words, they help stop the diarrhea. By the same token, eating any of these foods too frequently may well lead to another digestive problem... constipation.

We advised Amanda to cut back on Ethan's toast consumption and to include more foods in his diet that loosen stools, such as plums, pears and peaches. And today Amanda wrote to tell us that she's seen a big improvement!

"I still let him have toast, but only once a day, and he's started enjoying pears baked in the way you described on your blog. You'll be pleased to hear that Ethan is 'going' regularly again and we're all a lot happier!"

If your baby is prone to bouts of constipation, take a careful look at his diet and see if you are including too many foods that may be contributing to the problem... Read more...

February 15, 2008 14:32 - More Salmon Products Recalled in the UK

On Wednesday we posted a warning on our blog that a variety of fresh salmon products were being withdrawn by Morrisons because of possible contamination by white spirit (yuck).

February 15, 2008 14:36 - Warning About Fluoridated Nursery Water (US)

The Environmental Working Group - a nonprofit activist organization that researches environmental toxins - is warning parents that they are being misled by one of America's largest infant bottled water companies.

'Nursery Water', which is made with distilled water, is promoted as being beneficial for babies' teeth. The company claims that fluoride in water will 'strengthen your little one's teeth' and 'prevent tooth decay'. It also states that its product is 'made according to recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics'.

But, says the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the AAP's position is that infants under 6 months of age should NOT receive supplementary fluoride - and the Food and Drug Administration exluded health claims for fluoride in bottled water marketed for infant use.

In fact, dental experts warn that too much fluoride can result in damage to the permanant teeth.

To find out more about the controversy surrounding the claims made by 'Nursery Water', please read the EWG's full report here.

February 16, 2008 08:47 - The Funny Things Kids Say

Children certainly come out with some wonderful comments, ranging from the unwittingly hilarious to the deliciously tactless!

A recent favourite from one of our older daughters (age 6) came as we were preparing to go out for dinner. She remembered visiting the same restaurant a couple of weeks previously and REALLY enjoying an ice cream sundae.

"But," she said sadly, "it's Wednesday today, so they probably won't have them."

Too cute!

We've just come across a charming little blog made up entirely of comments like this. It's called Pear Soup, as in "When things go pear-shaped, kids say funny things. We make pear soup."

It seems to be a relatively new blog (we can only see entries going back to December), but there are some great comments and questions, like "If I plant this eggplant, will it grow eggs for us?"

You can add your OWN kids' comments (it would be fun to see more posts on this blog!) - otherwise, just enjoy reading the wonderful things that OTHER peole's kids say!

February 16, 2008 14:59 - Recall of Bassettbaby Drop-Side Cribs (US)

Wendy Bellissimo Hidden Hills Collection Drop-Side Cribs are being recalled because the spindles on the drop side can come loose, causing a gap that poses the risks of entanglement or strangulation to babies.

No other models are involved in this recall.
