November 15, 2007 07:57 - Thanksgiving Ideas for Baby
It was a real nightmare to feed my daughter Kylie - she just sat in her highchair and threw food around, but wouldn't eat any. Then one mealtime she looked more interested in what I was eating than in what I'd given her, so I slid my plate closer to her but carried on eating!
She began helping herself to food from my plate with her fingers... and actually eating it! She ate the most she'd eaten in ages - so now we do it at every mealtime. Sometimes, her food is different to mine, so I just push it to her side of my plate and she still feels like we're sharing!
This might not suit everyone, but it certainly works for me. I'd have done anything to get her to eat!"
Thanks, Pauline - we've actually used this approach ourselves and it probably works so well because your baby feels really 'included' in your meal. There's also the element of "your dinner looks nicer than mine" - in fact, we still get that feeling sometimes as adults!
It's great to hear that Kylie's enjoying her food now - thank you so much for sharing your tip!

November 15, 2007 08:21 - Free Toothbrushes For Babies in the UK
Health authorities in the west of England are to start giving free dental packs, containing a toothbrush and information about caring for tiny teeth, at babies' 8 month check ups.
So far, Primary Care trusts in Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset are all participating, hoping to reduce the high levels of tooth decay in children from those areas. Alarmingly, around 40% of children have some form of tooth decay at six years of age!
Many parents make the mistake of thinking that dental care is unimportant for milk teeth - after all, if the teeth are going to fall out anyway, what's the point of keeping them scrupulously clean? What they don't realize is that the way in which the milk teeth are cared for can have a significant impact on the development of the permanant teeth later on....

November 18, 2007 08:53 - Homemade Oatcakes with Cottage Cheese
These oatcakes for baby are incredibly easy to prepare - and make a satisfying finger food for older babies who are happily biting and chewing! Remember that oats may contain traces of gluten - so this recipe is not suitable if your baby is following a gluten-free diet.
You will need...
4 fl oz (1/2 cup) boiling water 6oz (3/4 cup) oatmeal (medium) 1tsp unsalted butter
In a bowl, stir the butter into the boiling water until it has completely melted. Next, stir in the oatmeal and allow the mixture to stand for 5 minutes - you should be left with a fairly stiff dough. Rub some oats on to a surface suitable for rolling out the dough (to stop it sticking). Turn out the dough, then form it into a ball. Next, roll it out to around 1/4 inch thick. Cut it into shapes - triangles are more traditional, but any shape will do! Place the uncooked oatcakes on a greased baking tray and bake at 350 deg F (180 deg C) for around 15-20 mins, until golden. Cool, then top with cottage cheese (or serve it as a dip). You can combine the cottage cheese with a fruit puree that your baby enjoys - banana works well, as do peach, apple and pear! Yum yum!
