October 8, 2007 14:20 - Quick Tip - How To Stop Sliced Apples Turning Brown

If your baby is at the stage where he is eating chunks of peeled, raw apple, then you may find that the slices turn brown before he has finished eating the first piece! Now, some babies won't even notice - and if they do, it doesn't bother them - but if your baby is as fussy as one of ours, he will refuse to eat the apple if it doesn't look 'perfect'!

The usual way to stop an apple from turning brown is to sprinkle it with lemon juice. Whilst a little lemon juice used for this purpose shouldn't do your baby any harm, he may reject the apple if he can detect the taste of the juice.

So a good alternative is to soak the sliced apple in apple juice!

It works just as well as lemon juice and is a great replacement if you want or need to avoid adding citrus to your baby's food!

October 9, 2007 21:38 - Starbucks Recalls Children's Plastic Cups (US)

Starbucks is recalling its Children's Plastic Cups because they pose laceration and choking hazards.

The cups, pictured below, feature a colourful face that can break off if the cup is dropped. This may leave sharp edges or small parts and Starbucks has received seven reports of the cups breaking, with two children beginning to choke on the small pieces.

The styles of 10 ounce cup involved in this recall are

  • 'Dash' Green Turtle
  • 'Dot' Red Ladybug
  • Chick Yellow
  • Bunny Pink
These cups were sold from May 2006 through August 2007 exclusively at Starbucks stores for around $6.

Please take these cups away from your children if you have them and contact Starbucks at (888) 288-4008 to receive instructions on returning the cups for a refund. Alternatively, you can visit their website. As an incentive for customers to return the cups, Starbucks is offering a complimentary beverage!

October 10, 2007 12:58 - Reader's Avocado Tip

Mica from Scotland wrote to us yesterday after reading our avocado baby food page and our comments about stopping avocado from turning brown. She said
"I agree that keeping the pit in the avocado doesn't really stop it from turning brown, even though all the books tell you that's what you're supposed to do.

But at our Mum and Baby group someone said that if you mix mashed avocado with mashed banana, it won't go brown. I tried it and it's true!"

Now that's interesting - especially when you consider that banana on its own will turn brown when cut, just like avocado. Sadly, we haven't been able to put this tip to the test just yet as there are no avocados available locally! But if any of you out there have a banana and avocado handy, please do test this out and let us know! If it works, it means you can mash a whole banana and avocado together and save some for later!

We do love getting your tips - please keep them rolling in so we can share them here!

If you haven't visited our avocado page yet, which is full of tips and advice about preparing this nutritious fruit for your little one, you can find it here!

October 11, 2007 16:14 - Baby's Cold Medicines Recalled

Johnson & Johnson and Wyeth are withdrawing several cold medicines for babies from sale. This, according to the company, is not because the products are unsafe, but is because some parents are accidentally overdosing their children with these medicines.

All of their products for children over the age of two, however, will remain on sale and are not part of this recall. Additionally, single ingredient pain relievers and fever reducers which are labelled as suitable for infants will still be available.

The products being recalled are

  • Concentrated Infants' Tylenol Drops Plus Cold & Cough
  • Concentrated Infants' Tylenol Drops Plus Cold
  • Pediacare Infant Drops Decongestant (PSE)
  • Pediacare Infant Dropper Decongestant (PE)
  • Pediacare Infant Drops Decongestant & Cough (PSE)
  • Pediacare Infant Dropper Decongestant & Cough (PE)
  • Pediacare Infant Dropper Long-Acting Cough
The recall of these products follows recommendations from the Consumer Healthcare Products Association that over-the-counter cough and cold medicines should be labelled "Not for use in children under two years of age".

If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact McNeils Consumer Relationship Center at 1-877-895-3665 (English) or 1-888-466-8746 (Spanish). Alternatively, you can visit www.tylenol.com

October 12, 2007 00:14 - Our Extreme Makeover!

Well, it's not that extreme, actually - but you may notice that we are making some changes to the layout of our site!

All of our information is still in place, but over the coming weeks you will find that some pages look different to others. Apart from being a little inconsistent, this shouldn't affect ANYTHING else on our pages - so if you DO find anything that isn't working as it should, then please let us know!

Thank you for bearing with us while we continue to improve the Homemade Baby Food Recipes website!

October 13, 2007 12:09 - Soothe Your Baby's Cold Symptoms Naturally

With many infants' medicines being withdrawn from the market, some parents are now wondering what they can do to make their little ones more comfortable when they have a cold.

News of the medicine recall will prompt many parents to look for alternative ways to deal with their babies' symptoms - and, in our opinion, that's a good thing!

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, no over-the-counter cold medicine has been proven to work in children under age 6 anyway.

So it really makes sense to look for natural ways to help your little one feel better (although you should always seek medical advice if you are at all concerned about your baby, of course).

Tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics include treating sore throats, runny noses, coughs and fever with humid air, fluids and non-aspirin pain relievers. When any of our children have had a cold, we have found it helpful to sit in the bathroom with them and run a hot bath - this produces a cloud of steam that really helps with their breathing if they are stuffy. (Please note that we are not suggesting that you sit them IN the hot bath, of course - just being in the room as the water runs is sufficient).

Another thing we have found very useful is our recipe for an easily digestible and nutritious broth.

It meets the needs for fluids and provides valuable nutrients at the same time, which help strengthen your baby's defences against his cold. And because it's a fluid, you can feed it to your baby from a bottle if he doesn't feel like eating.

Find out more about why our broth recipe is so good for your baby, and discover just how to make it...

October 14, 2007 21:57 - Melon Magic!

Juicy, delicious, succulent and nutritious! Yes, we're talking about melons, those versatile fruits that can be served in so many different ways to your baby!

Some people are deceived by the high water content of melons, believing them to be refreshing - yet offering little in the way of nutrition.

So it may be a pleasant surprise to learn that this delectable fruit contains an array of valuable nutrients - and, because most babies love the taste, it's very easy to include melons in your little one's diet!

Learn more about melons, including how to prepare and serve them to your baby, in our new Melon Baby Food section...
