September 25, 2007 13:08 - Dreamy Creamy Peaches
If you're looking for an unusual breakfast idea for your baby, then try this delicious peach recipe sent into us by Emily from Brighton, UK - it's super-simple and YUMMY! You could, of course, use nectarines instead of peaches - but whichever fruit you use, make sure it's ripe and juicy.
You will need
1/2 peach, skin and stone removed 2tbsp cottage cheese 2tsp unflavoured, natural yogurt drop of vanilla essence tiny pinch of powdered ginger (optional)
How to make it
Chop the peach into small pieces, or puree it if you think your baby will spit out the lumps! Drain the cottage cheese through a sieve and place it into a small bowl. Stir in the peach, yogurt, vanilla essence and the ginger (if using) and serve! Alternatively, make the dish the night before you need it and refrigerate it overnight - this way, the peach thoroughly flavours the entire dish!

September 26, 2007 13:32 - Breastfed Babies Need More Vitamin D (Canada)
Vitamin D is in the news once again as the Canadian Pediatric Society recommends that breastfeeding mothers increase their daily vitamin D intake tenfold - from 200IU (international units) to 2,000IU. And experts say that even this isn't enough to protect babies from problems associated with vitamin D deficiency.
As this report reveals in more detail, many women of childbearing age are severely vitamin D deficient - particularly in Canada.
Studies are being held in the US to see if it would be possible to increase levels of vitamin D supplementation further still. Breastfeeding mothers in the trial have been offered daily supplements of 6,000IU and, it seems, suffered no ill effects.
Daily vitamin D supplements of 400IU have been recommended for babies in Canada for some time. The main source of vitamin D is the sun and parts of Canada receive little sunlight at certain times of year.
The drastic change in recommendations has come about because experts say that the risks to babies from vitamin D deficiency are greater than previously acknowledged.
But these changes may be confusing for parents - Health Canada is warning that TOO MUCH vitamin D may carry its own risks to health.
And breastfeeding support groups, such as La Leche, may take issue with US pediatrician Dr Bruce Hollis's remarks that "...every breastfeeding infant absolutely needs a vitamin D supplement".
Visit our "Your Baby and Vitamin D" page to learn more about the "sunshine vitamin" and read about why there is opposition to routine vitamin D supplementation for babies...
