August 27, 2007 08:31 - Frozen Banana Fingers

Today we have an interesting but simple finger food idea, sent in to us by Emma from Tampa, Florida.

Emma hit upon this recipe when her son, Aiden was teething. His discomfort was making him reluctant to eat, so she tried to devise something that would both cool his gums AND fill his little tummy.

This recipe is suitable for babies who are coping well with finger foods.

You will need

1 ripe banana
natural yogurt
wheat germ

Peel the banana and cut it into thick 'fingers'.
Dip each banana finger into the yogurt and make sure it is well coated.
Then, roll each finger in wheat germ until thoroughly covered.
Finally, freeze the fingers on sheets of greaseproof paper and serve when firm.

Thank you, Emma, for sending in your recipe.

If you think that YOUR baby is ready to try some finger foods, then we have lots of advice to help you get started.

Our 'Finger Foods' section includes plenty of delicious ideas, ranging from simple suggestions for the finger food beginner to more advanced recipes for older babies...

August 28, 2007 08:42 - Peach and Ginger Cream

A savoury soup recipe or a dessert with a twist? This yummy combination could be served either way, although we tend to think of it as a soup - particularly when we use fresh ginger instead of ground, which gives it a slightly spicy flavour.

This recipe is suitable for babies from 6 months of age, but please ensure that you have introduced all ingredients separately beforehand. Ginger (which is great for digestion) should be considered a new "food" when you first give it to your baby, as should any other spice or herb. This means that it should be introduced with a food that your baby is already safely enjoying - that way, if he experiences any type of allergic reaction or digestive discomfort, then you will easily be able to identify the culprit.

You will need

1 fresh, ripe peach
little pinch of groung ginger or 1/8 tsp peeled, fresh ginger
whole milk (you can use breast milk or formula if you prefer - in fact breast milk adds a sweetness that may make the dish more acceptable for some babies)

First, remove the skin and pit from the peach. The easiest way to remove the skin is to plunge the entire peach into boiling water for several seconds, then transfer to a bowl of iced water for a few seconds more. You should find that the skin will slip off easily.
Chop the peach and place in a food processor along with the ginger.
Puree well and - as you do so - gradually pour in enough milk to give the consistency you prefer.
Chill, then serve!

This recipe would also make a tasty dip for your baby (avoid adding too much milk, as this will create an overly-thin texture for dipping). Another great idea is to pour this mixture over cooked, chopped chicken breast for an unusual but delicious fruity chicken dinner!

We have lots more suggestions for tasty chicken dishes on our Chicken Baby Food Recipes page...

August 29, 2007 08:39 - Non-Plastic Baby Food Storage

Thanks to various stories that have circulated via the web in recent years - both credible and otherwise - many people are now cautious about freezing food or liquids in containers made from plastic.

Whilst there seems to be no firm evidence either for or against the use of plastic storage containers in the freezer, some parents choose to 'play it safe' and look for alternative products to do the job - particularly when their baby's food is involved.

If this sounds like you, then you may be interested in checking out the Perfect Cube Trays from Tovolo.

Tovolo Set of 2 Perfect Cube Trays

Unlike plastic ice cube trays, which may absorb odours and colours from the foods stored in them, 'Perfect Cube Trays' absorb neither because they are made from silicone.

And that's not all - it is far easier to pop a food cube cleanly from a silicone tray than it is from a plastic one. The cubes, which are perfectly square, come out intact and don't stick to the bottom.

Tovolo's Perfect Cube Trays come in sets of two and are availble from Shop.com.

August 30, 2007 08:18 - Recall of Youth Hats (US)

Youth Hats, which were sold exclusively at Bass Pro Shops, are being recalled by Paramount Apparel International.

The Toddler and Youth Nylon Bucket Hats (pictured below) have drawstrings which may pose a strangulation hazard to young children, although no injuries have been reported.

A label that reads 'Bass Pro Shops' is sewn into the back of the hat and a bungee drawstring is sewn into the crown. The side of the hat has nylon fabric strips that snap up and the front has a zipper pocket with a boat-anchor appliqué with embroidered text.

The hats were sold from February 2007 through June 2007 for around $8.

If you have one of these hats at home, please stop using it and contact Paramount Apparel toll-free at (800) 255-4287 between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. CT Monday through Friday. You will be issued with a refund or replacement item.

Alternatively, you can visit the firm's website.

August 30, 2007 08:19 - Recall of Fresh Spinach (US and Canada)

Fresh, bagged spinach is being recalled by Metz Fresh, LLC as routine company testing discovered a sample contaminated with Salmonella. Fortunately, though, no-one has reported any signs of illness connected with this spinach.

The bags affected by this recall were distributed in Canada and the continental United States under the label 'Metz Fresh', in food service and retail packages. The recall includes 10 and 16 oz bags, plus 4-2.5 lb. and 4 lb. cartons. Only spinach bearing the tracking codes 12208114, 12208214 and 12208314 is included in this recall.

The FDA is advising consumers to either throw affected bags of spinach away, or return them to the store they bought them from for a full refund.

August 30, 2007 22:07 - Recall of Toys R Us Coloring Cases (US)

Well, here we are again, posting details of yet another toy recall because of excessive lead levels.

This time it's Imaginarium 213 Piece Wooden Coloring Cases from Toys R Us. The cases, which are about 14 inches high by 19 inches wide, include crayons, colored pencils, pastels, fiber pens, paintbrush, water colors, pencil, palette, white paint, ruler and pencil sharpener in a light tan wooden carrying case. The printed ink on the outer packaging of the wooden case contains lead - as does some of the black watercolour paint, in violation of the federal lead paint standard.

These cases were sold for around $20 from October 2006 through August 2007 at Toys R Us stores nationwide and also at toysrus.com.

If you have one of these sets at home, please return it to your nearest Toys R Us store, where you will receive a store credit. If you need more information, please call the company at (800) TOYSRUS/869-7787 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET Monday through Saturday, and between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday. Alternatively, you can visit the company's website.

September 1, 2007 21:51 - Should I Offer My Baby A Sippy Cup?

At what age should you introduce a sippy cup to your baby?

The answer is, of course... when he's ready!

There is no 'magic' age at which babies should be able to drink from a cup - you may have a friend whose 6 month old is already drinking from a lidded beaker, whilst YOUR little one is content to use his as an amusing toy for showering himself and you!

But this is nothing to be concerned about - many babies don't start to use a cup until after their first birthday! And don't forget that sippy cups are a relatively new invention. Previous generations managed perfectly well with an open beaker, as soon as baby was ready.

So is it time to offer YOUR baby a cup? Can offering a cup lead to problems - and what are your options if you decide to bypass this stage altogether?
