August 1, 2007 21:42 - Almost a Million Fisher Price Toys Recalled
There always seem to be a lot of product recalls involving toys and jewelry from discount stores that have high levels of lead within the paint. But the problem seems to be growing and growing - recently there was the enormous recall of Thomas the Tank Engine products - and now Fisher Price is recalling licensed character toys for the very same reason.
The figures and toys involved were manufactured between April 19, 2007 and July 6, 2007. They were either sold singly, or as part of a set, and all items (which are listed below) are marked "Fisher Price". You may find a date code between 109-7LF and 187-7LF marked either on the product or its packaging.
These items were sold for between $5 and $40 across the US from May 2007 through August 2007.
If you have any of these items, please take them away from your child (easier said than done, I know!) and contact Fisher Price. You will be asked to return the product and Fisher Price will provide a voucher for a replacement toy of your choice (up to the value of the product you're returning).
You can contact Fisher Price any time at (800) 916-4498 or visit their website.

August 3, 2007 15:28 - How Juices Are Harming Baby Teeth
A dentist group called "Teeth for Life" in the UK has warned parents that so-called "healthy juices" are harming children's teeth and causing serious dental erosion.
According to the group, the worst offenders are organic juices that combine fruit and sugar - and a survey conducted by YouGov found that 50% of parents in the UK don't realize that these juices can contain AS MUCH sugar as fizzy drinks/sodas.
A dentist from the group, Dr Stemmer, says that - although parents think they are offering their children "healthier drinks" - daily exposure to acidic fruit juice and fruit squashes causes loss of tooth enamel.
He added... "Even diet drinks which have no sugar in are very acidic and can dissolve tooth enamel."
You can read Dr Stemmer's recommendations for giving children juice in this report from the BBC - which also points out that dried fruit, too, is hazardous to baby teeth... another problem that many parents aren't aware of.
When it comes to your baby, the best drink you can offer (other than milk, of course) is water.
Once our children reached an age where they needed supplementary fluids, we NEVER offered them anything other than water. We often heard comments like
"Aren't you lucky that your baby will drink water! Mine won't drink anything other than juice!"
The truth is that it's not down to luck - the way to encourage your baby to accept and enjoy water is ONLY to offer water.
I'm sure our babies, too, would have had a preference for juice had we ever given them the opportunity to try it!
We also faced criticism from some, who felt that - by giving our little ones plain water - we were "depriving" them in some way!
If you receive any similar comments, please don't cave into pressure! There will be times in the future when, inevitably, your children will be offered less healthy juices and carbonated drinks, particularly in social situations. Whilst you still have SOLE control over what your little one is drinking, try to establish an appreciation and enjoyment of water... and the good habits you instill now may stick with him in the future!

August 4, 2007 16:16 - Recall of Orvis Company Toys
The Orvis Company is recalling horse and fairy doll toys that were sold with sleeping bags because they pose a choking risk to young children.
These items (pictured below) were sold via the Orvis Company website and their mail-order catalogue from September 2006 through December 2006 for around $70.
The horse toy has plastic button eyes and the fairy doll has a pompom nose. These parts can come off very easily and then present a choking hazard.
The horse was sold with a Horse Animal Sleeping Bag and has outstretched fore and back legs and a black mane and tail. A hook/loop on the horse's belly attaches to the sleeping bag. PLEASE NOTE that stuffed horses with embroidered eyes are NOT part of this recall.
The fairy doll toy was sold with the Unicorn Animal Sleeping Bag and is one of three toys that attaches to it. The other toys - which are unicorns - are not included in this recall.
If you have these toys, please take them away from your child and contact The Orvis Company toll-free at (866) 531-6199 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday to obtain a replacement horse or doll. The good news is that you can carry on using the sleeping bag in the meantime.

August 4, 2007 16:17 - Lowe's Window Blinds Recalled Due to Strangulation Hazard (US)
Window blinds that were sold exclusively at Lowe's stores are being recalled because the pull cord is looped. This is dangerous for young children and poses the risk of strangulation.
The blinds involved are Basic Blindz® Natural Faux Wood Plantation Blinds. You can view a complete list of the item numbers involved on the CPSC website.
If you do have these blinds, which were sold from March 2007 through July 2007 for between $24 and $40, please contact Springs Window Fashions toll-free at (866) 305-8652 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. You will be issued with a free retrofit kit.
