June 26, 2007 14:50 - Recall of TK Maxx Baby Dresses (UK)
Baby dresses sold at TK Maxx are being recalled because they present a choking hazard.
The dresses, pictured below, were sold as part of a set that also contained underwear and a hat. The problem is that there are decorative beads on the dress, which can come off.
These dresses have been on sale since April. You can find labels reading "Little Bitty" and "Exclusive of TRMS Excepto Los Adornos. V52440. Made in Philippines" sewn into the dress.
If you bought one of these dresses, please return it to any TK Maxx store for a full refund. If you have any questions, please call TK Maxx customer service on 01923 473561 or email customerservice@tkmaxx.com. The product recall reference is SP07284.

June 26, 2007 15:18 - Non-Plastic Sippy Cups
If you prefer to avoid giving your baby a sippy cup made from plastic, then a good alternative DOES exist.
Concerns about the chemicals used in the production of plastics, such as the recent controversy over Bisphenol in baby bottles, have made many parents think hard about the materials their babies' equipment is made from.
Sippy cups, which babies often love to chew, are a particular concern for many Mums and we received an e mail yesterday from Caroline in Tampa, US, who wondered if such as thing as a non-plastic sippy cup exists.
What Caroline is looking for is the
Klean Kanteen 12 oz Stainless Steel Water Bottle with Sippy Cup Spout, one of a large range of stainless steel drinking vessels that we highly recommend. Unlike the water from plastic bottles, which does tend to take on a "plasticky" taste, the water from a Klean Kanteen tastes remarkably pure and clean.
These little cups are also lighter than they appear and are easy for little fingers to hold. They come with a sippy cup adapter made from a safe, non leaching polypropylene plastic and 2 Avent spouts.
Our "Introducing a Sippy Cup" page looks at how and when to get your baby started with a cup and suggests a couple of alternatives...Read more...

June 27, 2007 10:01 - Reader's Tip - Easy Homemade Rusks
We received another great tip today from Nicola in Somerset, UK, who has come up with a great way of making her own quick and easy rusks (teething biscuits).
Please note that babies develop at different rates and it is impossible to give an age at which all babies will be able to safely cope with rusks and teething biscuits. There is always the possibility that small pieces may break off, so it is very important to closely supervise your baby at all times.
Nicola suggests taking a slice of whole grain bread and cutting off the crusts, then spreading the bread VERY thinly with Marmite. You then roll the slice of bread tightly, place it in the microwave and cook it for one minute. The end result is hard, tasty and great for gnawing on!
If you're in the UK, Canada, Sri Lanka, South Africa or the Netherlands, you'll be familiar with Marmite - a savoury spread made from yeast extract, which is a good source of B vitamins. It does contain some salt, so we wouldn't recommend giving it to very young babies. But a small amount spread thinly should be fine for older babies (although you should always check with your doctor first) - and babies really do seem to adore the taste.
Visitors from Australia and New Zealand will also be familiar with Marmite, although the Australian version tastes different to the English one. You could also try using Vegemite instead. And our Swiss visitors could use their version - Cenovis.
Although none of these spreads are widely popular in the US, you should be able to find them in many imported food stores if you feel like giving them a try.
If not, or for younger babies, these simple rusks could be made without the addition of anything at all!
Thanks, Nicola, for the tip!
Does YOUR baby enjoy Marmite or a similar spread? Have you tried these rusks - did your baby like them? Please leave your comments below.

June 28, 2007 10:14 - Warning About Formula In Bashas' Stores (Arizona)
Hungry for Respect, a coalition of grocery store employees, their union and community groups, has carried out an investigation that has discovered the widespread sale of expired infant formula in Arizona at Bashas' stores.
As you can see from this report, a horrifying 58% of Bashas' Supermarkets stores and more than half of the Food City stores visited by the group stocked out-of-date formula. In addition, expired infant formula was found at 10% of the Bashas' upscale AJ's Fine Food stores.
The expiration date on formula is important because its nutritional value is affected over time. Babies receiving formula past its "use by" date may not be getting the nutrition levels recommended by the FDA.
If you have bought infant formula from a Bashas' owned store, Hungry for Respect's coalition member Alfredo Gutierrez advises that you carefully check the expiration dates.

June 29, 2007 15:31 - Something Special For Baby - Butternut Squash Risotto
How about cooking a delicious risotto for your little one this weekend? OK, making a risotto for one may be a little TOO much work! But this recipe is so tasty that you could serve it to the rest of the family, too - as an appetizer, side dish or even a main course.
You will need
1 tablespoon olive oil 1oz spring onions (green onions or scallions), sliced very thinly 2oz fresh parsley, chopped 14oz butternut squash, peeled and diced 20fl oz homemade chicken stock 4 1/2 oz Arborio rice (this is the best type of rice for risotto because it gives a lovely, creamy result. Regular rice is not a good substitute - but, fortunately, Arborio rice is widely available.) 2tsp butter (optional) 2oz Parmesan cheese
In a heavy-bottomed pan, saute the sliced spring onion in the oil until golden. Add the rice and stir well, coating the grains with the oil. Increase the heat and add a ladleful of the chicken stock (broth). Stir continuously untill all the stock has been absorbed. Add the squash and the parsley, along with another ladleful of chicken stock and keep stirring to stop the rice from sticking (we did warn you this one takes a bit of work!). Keep adding the broth until the rissoto is done - the grains of rice should still be visible, but they should be tender with no hard centre (this should take around 20 mins). If you want to use the butter, stir it in at this point. Stir in a little Parmesan cheese and use the rest to top the risotto!
Yum - we hope your baby - and you - enjoy this extra special treat!
