February 5, 2007 15:24 - Giving Your Baby Soy
Soy, which comes from soybeans, is a very nutritious food. It is high in protein and contains all eight essential acids and other important vitamins and minerals. Tofu, which is fermented soymilk curd, is becoming very popular as a food for babies - not only is it packed with nutrients, but it takes on the flavours of foods that it's cooked with. This means that you can easily boost the nutritional value of your baby's favourite meals without him even realizing!
But soy is an allergenic food - containing at least 15 allergenic proteins - and soy allergy among children is relatively common. This means that foods containing soy need to be introduced to your baby with care, particularly if he is at a higher than usual risk of developing an allergy to soy... Read more...

February 6, 2007 09:23 - New Car Seat Law (Northern Ireland)
A new law will become effective in Northern Ireland on 27th February, making it compulsory to place a child under 3 in a baby or child seat when travelling by car. Parents who do not comply with this rule will be liable for a fine of £500.
Under the new law, children between the ages of 3 and 12 and below 135 cm in height must be placed in a booster seat.
Plans are being made to increase the penalty for failing to adhere to the new rules to include a three point license penalty. Exceptions will be made for "unforeseen emergencies" and children travelling in the back of taxis will be exempt.

February 6, 2007 13:13 - Fruits And Veggies Help Baby's Iron Levels
Studies carried out in New Zealand have shown that a lack of fruits and vegetables in the diets of young children can lead to iron deficiency, which affects the development of the brain.
Researchers from Auckland University say that around one in seven children between the ages of 6 months and 2 years are deficient in iron, although there may be no visible signs. Deborah Brunt, of the department of paediatrics, stated that children who ate fruits had better iron levels. This was particularly true if the fruit was eaten at mealtimes.
Your baby's body needs vitamin C in order to absorb iron from foods - therefore if he eats fruit at mealtimes, the vitamin C from the fruit will help him absorb the iron from his meal more easily. But this particular study found that over 40% of children were not eating enough fruit, putting them at risk of iron deficiency, which can have serious, long term effects. Previous research had already noticed that many children were being given tea to drink - this is not recommended, as tea interferes with the body's absorption of iron.
Our "Iron Supplements" page gives you more information about the role of iron in your baby's diet, including signs of deficiency, details of the iron levels in breast milk and ways in which you can increase your baby's iron intake... Read more...

February 7, 2007 13:09 - Extra Test For Newborn Babies In England
All new babies born in England will be tested for a rare inherited condition called MCADD.
MCADD stands for Medium Chain Acyl CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency, which is a metabolic disease caused by the lack of an enzyme responsible for converting fat to energy. It affects between one in 10,000 and one in 20,000 babies in the UK and can be treated through dietary management if identified at an early stage. If not, it can lead to serious neurological damage and can be fatal.
The new test will be introduced over the next 2 years, but has already been piloted in some parts of the country. It will be given as part of the heel-prick test, which is already given to babies during their first 2 weeks of life.
Peel and dice the parsnip and the pumpkin. Steam, or simmer in a little water, until nice and tender. Drain, then blend well in a food processor - or, if you prefer, mash well with a fork. Simply stir in the nutmeg and chives... and serve!
Don't forget to check our baby food processor and blender pages for some some handy kitchen gadgets to make preparing your own baby food that little bit easier!
Does your baby just love pumpkin? Then why not try our pumpkin soup, pumpkin stew and pumkin pasta recipes, too...

February 8, 2007 14:48 - Can My Baby Eat Weetabix?
We are often asked about giving Weetabix to babies - it's a very popular breakfast cereal in some parts of the world and appears to be a healthy option... but is Weetabix safe for infants?
Some of you may not be familiar with Weetabix, which is a cereal made from whole grain wheat. The expression "whole grain" means that it contains the bran and the germ of the wheat - both of which are very nutritious, being rich in minerals, vitamins and protein. In addition, Weetabix contains iron, niacin and thiamine (viamin B1).
Despite the health benefits of this cereal, which can be mixed with breast milk, formula or cow's milk, it may not be suitable for every baby.
Wheat contains gluten. This means that Weetabix is NOT suitable for babies under 6 months of age and should not be given as a first weaning food. You should discuss the introduction of Weetabix and any foods containing wheat with your child's doctor - particularly if there is a family history of Coeliac disease or gluten intolerance.
Wheat is a potential allergen - our baby food allergies page gives you more information about food allergy, including a summary of the risk factors for developing food allergy.
The fibre in Weetabix can be a little harsh on the tummy of a very young baby and some parents have found that it can cause diarrhea and nappy/diaper rash. All babies are different, of course, and some babies enjoy Weetabix on a daily basis with no problem at all - so, if there are no risk factors involved in introducing wheat to your little one, you can try gradually introducing Weetabix from 6 months of age, watching carefully for any sign of digestive upset.
Our "Breakfast for Baby" page offers you some more great ideas to get your little one's day off to a healthy start... Read more...

We all know how important it is to look after our children's teeth, but the proper care of milk teeth during baby's first year is a gray area for many parents.
