January 2, 2007 14:38 - The Dangers Of Salt In Baby Food

We all know that it's unsafe to add salt to baby food - but it's important to understand why it can be dangerous and to be aware of other sources of salt in our babies' diets that we may not have thought of...

January 3, 2007 12:53 - Flying With Your Baby? New Baggage Policy From British Airways

If you're planning on flying with your baby this year, you might be interested to hear that British Airways has announced a new baggage policy, effective from 13 February 2007.

The changes, which include alterations to checked baggage allowances, maximum size and weight and baggage charges, are listed in detail here. The policy does state that those flying with a baby will be allowed to check in a collapsible buggy/stroller in addition to their luggage allowance and that infants will be allowed to check one bag free of charge in all classes on all routes.

It's worth reading through the changes carefully to avoid excess baggage charges - under the new rules the maximum weight for any bag will be reduced by almost 30% and the airline will not accept oversized items exceeding 98in x 39in x 31in.

January 3, 2007 18:09 - A Potential Treatment For Colic?

Italian researchers have discovered that a particular type of bacteria may help relieve colic in breastfed babies.

Tests showed that breastfed babies given daily supplements of Lactobacillus reuteri (a friendly, probiotic bacteria found in the human gut) cried far less from colicky pain by the end of the study. In fact, the time these babies spent crying was significantly reduced from over three hours per day to less than an hour. Mothers were also asked to avoid dairy products during the tests - but this didn't seem to reduce the symptoms of colic at all. To read more about this study, you can click here for the full report at WebMD.

This research is in its early stages, so no recommendations are being made to parents yet. But colic is a distressing condition for babies and parents alike, often causing long periods of inconsolable crying - and it would be great if further research confirms these promising results!

January 4, 2007 08:59 - Simple Brown Rice Pudding For Baby

Here's a quick and easy recipe for a tasty brown rice pudding for baby, suitable from 6 months of age.

Brown rice is nutritionally superior to white because, during the production process, only the outer layer (or hull) of the rice kernel is removed. During white rice production, the kernel is fully milled and much of the iron, fibre and vitamins it contains are destroyed.

If you plan to serve this rice pudding to your baby, please ensure that he has been separately introduced to all the ingredients first.

YOU WILL NEED

2oz cooked brown rice
2 dried apricots, softened by soaking in hot water
1/2 ripe banana
2tbsp apple juice
tiny pinch nutmeg

Simply combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend thoroughly. You can adjust the consistency to suit your baby by adding a little more/less apple juice.

January 4, 2007 14:51 - Warning About The Use Of Sippy Cups

Experts at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) are advising parents that water is the only drink that should given to children in sippy cups, except for at mealtimes.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there was a worrying increase of tooth decay in children aged 2 to 5 of 15.2% between 1988-1994 and 1999-2002. Research has shown that almost a third of toddlers with tooth decay used sippy cups - and the problem is that parents are offering sugary drinks for prolonged periods in these types of cups.

The AAPD suggests the following guidelines for parents

  • Sippy cups should be used to help children make the transition from a bottle to a regular cup and should not be used for extended periods of time.
  • Other than at mealtimes, sippy cups should only be filled with water. Any other liquids should not be given on a frequent basis from a sippy cup or bottle - even if the drink is diluted.
  • Sippy cups should only contain water if used at bedtimes or naptimes.

January 5, 2007 12:58 - Reheating Baby Food

Is it safe to reheat cooked food for my baby? What are the rules about cooking and then freezing foods that were previously frozen, such as meat?

It is safe to cook a meal - or even a batch of food for your baby - in advance. It should then be cooled and either refrigerated or frozen immediately. When you reheat the food, it is very important to heat it thoroughly, so that it is piping hot throughout - of course, you'll have to allow it to cool to a safe temperature before you serve it to your baby!

  • Once the food has cooled, serve it immediately. Bacteria can grow in food left sitting at room temperature.
  • Don't be tempted to only partially warm the food for your baby - thorough heating is needed to destroy any bacteria that may be present.
  • Once your baby has finished his meal, discard any leftovers - it is not safe to heat the meal for a second time.
Using previously frozen raw foods

It is safe to thaw raw ingredients (such as meat), cook them for your baby, freeze the prepared baby food, then reheat it when needed. But...

  • You must make sure the food has been COMPLETELY defrosted in the refrigerator before you cook it
  • Make sure the food is then cooked through and piping hot
  • Cool the food completely and as quickly as possible before you freeze it
  • When reheating the food, follow the food safety rules above
