The American Academy of Pediatrics has released an excellent set of guidelines for parents to follow, to keep their children and families safe over Christmas.

These Holiday Safety Tips From The American Academy of Pediatrics include

  • how to safely purchase and set up your tree
  • safely using decorative lights
  • what to look out for when buying decorations and how to safely decorate your home
  • toy safety
  • food safety
  • visiting others or entertaining at home
  • fireplace hazards
These guidelines are a must-read for all parents and highlight some dangers that we tend to overlook at this busy time of year.

In addition to the precautions this article advises, remember to be very vigilant when visiting friends or relatives who either don't have children, or haven't looked after any for a long time. For instance, you would never dream of passing someone a hot drink or tray of food over your child's head - your baby's safety is always foremost in your mind. But some people may simply "not be thinking" and can be very careless around infants. Don't expect others to be as careful as you are - and always keep a close eye on your baby when you're out and about!
