October 12, 2006 15:26 - Vegetarian Baby Food Ideas - Stuffed Green Peppers

This vegetarian baby food recipe is wonderfully healthy and delicious (green peppers are an excellent source of vitamin C) - and it may also tempt a fussy eater who might enjoy the novelty of eating straight from the green pepper itself! This dish will suit babies who are comfortable with soft lumps in their food.

YOU WILL NEED...

1 1/2 oz cooked brown rice
1 green pepper
2fl oz water
1/2 tsp olive oil
1oz chopped onion
1oz chopped celery
1oz chopped mushrooms
pinch freshly ground black pepper
pinch dried oregano
1oz fresh parsley, chopped very finely
6oz canned/tinned tomatoes, mashed well
1oz grated Cheddar cheese
1tsp wheatgerm

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 375 deg F, 190 deg C.
Cut the green pepper in half lengthways, de-seed and remove the stem.
Immerse the pepper in boiling hot water for around 5-6 mins, until tender but still firm, then rinse with cold water.
Heat the oil in a frying pan, then saute the onions, celery and mushrooms with the herbs and black pepper, until tender.
Add the rice, cheese and half the tomatoes and combine thoroughly.
Spoon this mixture into the green pepper halves, then place in an oiled casserole dish.
Pour the remainder of the tomatoes on top, then sprinkle with the wheatgerm.
Bake for 30 mins!

If you have any tasty vegetarian baby food recipes to share, we'd love to see them!

October 12, 2006 23:01 - How Early Can My Baby Fly?

This question almost sounds as if it should have a punchline! But I'll leave YOU to think one up - the simple answer is that it's best to check with the airline concerned. But - as a general rule - airlines like babies to be at least 2 weeks old before they permit them to fly.

This is to make sure that both mother and baby have recovered sufficiently from the birth and that any initial feeding problems have settled down.

But we came across a story today from Egypt - in which a baby was BORN en route from Kuwait City to Alexandria in Northern Egypt! The baby's mother, Heba Majdy, was 8 months pregnant when she boarded the aircraft yesterday, after assurances from her doctor that it was safe for her to fly. But 50 mins before the end of the flight - at an altitude of 30,000 feet - Heba notified the crew that her baby was on its way!

Fortunately, Mohammed Al Saleh - a gynaecologist and maternity expert - was on the flight on the way to his vacation. With the assistance of 2 crew members, a makeshift delivery room and a basic first aid kit, he delivered baby Nancy 20 minutes later! The captain then informed the cheering passengers and mother and baby are both doing well.

If this sounds a bit of an ordeal for Nancy's mother - consider this! The airline, Jazeera Airways, has offered Heba free flights for Nancy until she reaches the age of 18 - a wonderful gift for the new baby.

October 15, 2006 17:39 - Introducing Solids To Your Baby - How Things Have Changed Over The Years

I was reading a very interesting article today at Baby Blog, which summarised a survey carried out by Johnson's Baby looking at how motherhood has changed over the last 40 years.

One important difference mentioned was that today's Mums are particularly concerned about nutrition, speech and sleep - whilst in the 1960's Mums' concerns mainly revolved around good manners, education and physical development!

It is great to see that more and more parents are ensuring good nutrition for their children by educating themselves in order to make the right choices and - particularly when it comes to introducing solids for the first time - questioning the advice they are given. And this is very important when that advice is being given by people from the older generation - because, however well intended, that advice just isn't relevant today.

Current recommendations from the World Health Organisation state that babies should not be introduced to solid foods until they are at least 6 months old. This is very different advice to that given to OUR parents, who will argue that they gave YOU solid food at 6 weeks of age, and YOU'VE turned out OK!

This is an argument faced all too often by parents today, but it's important to stand your ground on this one!

In our parents' day, little research had been done into the effects of introducing solids at a particular age. But this is a subject that has been extensively studied in recent years and we now know that introducing solid foods before 6 months of age can cause problems including food allergies, digestive problems and obesity. And, of course, introducing solid foods to early means that a baby is not developmentally prepared with the skills he needs to cope with solid foods, leading to all sorts of feeding problems that would probably never had arisen if the introduction of solids had been delayed.

If you are being pressured by a family member to introduce solids to your baby sooner than you had planned, it might be a good idea to take them along with you to the next doctor's appointment. That way, they can hear for themselves that infant nutrition guidleines have changed enormously since they were caring for a baby.

And it may also be worth pointing out that, with over 2 million Americans suffering from food allergies of one sort or another and around 65% of the population overweight (approximately 31% obese), perhaps the guidelines followed by THEIR generation did more harm than they'd realised!
